The progress of Virtual Reality is REAL.
The technology has come so far over the last couple of years that we can now see this type big idea being accessible to the end consumers.
Needless to say that an institution and as Spectacular as the Versailles Castle wouldn’t have contemplated this project if the results didn’t’ display the magnificent splendor of the castle in the best quality possible.

If Louis XIV can allow his legacy to be captured and distributed in VR, surely contemporary media outlets can too…

Unpacking what the AR/VR community can expect after Oculus Connect 6

Mark Zuckerberg opened OC6 day 1 keynote by laying out his ambition to build the next computing platform. One that makes us feel more present & connected; not like most of the hardware we use today. His view is that the next generation of computers should do the opposite. Clearly, Facebook’s ambition is to own the next computing platform the way Apple currently owns mobile.

A few minutes into the event the vision for Facebook with Oculus was set.

To successfully execute it, the next computing platform will need to integrate our real and virtual worlds seamlessly, delivering a sense of presence that puts people at the center of the computing experience rather than the other way around. Zuckerberg, Abrash and Carmack recognize that we are just at the beginning of this journey and that Facebook along with the developers’ community still has a ton of work to do. 

The theme of the conference was “The time is now” meant to make everyone feel like they made the right decision by entering the VR industry early and that now is definitely not the time to give up. Speakers were parading the success of Beat Saber as the first VR platinum title, Michael Abrash referred to the current times of spatial computing are like the good old days of the Xerox park days of Silicon Valley… There is no doubt that a new generation of computers is going to transform the tech we know today. It is not IF, it’s WHEN.

Here are the main components to this long, difficult, expensive yet exciting roadmap that I captured at OC6 :

The tech must reach mass adoption.
That’s what was attempted with Samsung GearVR. It actually did a pretty good job leveraging Samsung’s distribution but since Oculus GO & Oculus Quest shipped, it became obvious that its retention rate doesn’t stack up. 

VR adoption is seeing its first hockey stick curve, so RIP mobile VR, hello “standalone” VR. 

For some, forward compatibility features such as Oculus Link is a sign that standalone headsets are also now a priority over more powerful computer tethered headsets. 

In the future, phones will serve as companions to headsets, AR glasses or other devices rather than remain our display screens. 

So the path is clear: Capture market share by positioning Oculus GO as the entry point and upgrade enthusiasts to Oculus Quest whilst continuing to fearlessly improve the tech in the background and wave it with Facebook’s DNA.

Mass adoption will only happen thanks to an appealing ecosystem.

For the hardware to reach mass adoption it needs an appealing ecosystem…  and for Oculus, the ecosystem appears to be more Facebook infused than ever.
Although the ultimate goal of the ecosystem is to bring VR to more people, the success metrics used by executives on stage sounded very Facebook: Frequency of interactions, diversity of interactions – i.e. extend the library of content to generate more reasons to get into VR, strength of interactions – i.e. Emotions triggered by VR to be as strong as emotions triggered by real life events.

The introduction of discovery tools such as Oculus media studio and profile pages, well established in social media, is another sign of Facebook expanding into Oculus. These tools allow creators to share videos of their VR content in and outside of VR in 2D & 360 format. The increasingly popular mixed reality video (still in closed beta) also aims at showing immersive experiences to non VR users

At the moment, the most powerful levers to push these metrics up seem to be: gaming and social features. Gaming because the majority of the VR community are gamers. Social interactions because our virtual world will only merge with our real world if our social connections can cross over to it.

So for now, Gaming coupled with social interactions brings Facebook horizon

This seems to be missing a part of our behavior: media consumption and attendance. John Carmack was advocating, very strongly, for immersive media to be part of the immediate plan to enrich the ecosystem and grow adoption.

It will only work if sense of presence is achieved.

Ultimately, the next generation of computers will improve our lives only if they feel like a natural extensions of ourselves. The first, and very impressive step to this is the Oculus Quest hand tracking

In the longer term, it will be codec avatar, reconstructed spaces

 and neural communication.

This will enable us to tele-transport to a reconstructed living room with our friends and family or join a meeting remotely in person not in a video conference.

Here again, the time is now but as Abrash mentioned, Hofstadter’s law: “It always takes longer than you expect, even when you apply Hofstadter’s law

How a 73 year old organization wins at innovation

The companies that win at innovation and successfully scale emerging technologies are the ones that experiment early and know which signs of growth to look at. The National Basketball Association might be a 73 year old organization, it is definitely this type of company.

Having worked closely with NBA at Twitter, not only were they one of the first sports league globally to fully embrace the power of real time public conversation for their audience engagement, they also understood quickly that it would grow the fandom of each team, allow players to express their personalities off the court, extend the reach of their TV broadcast as well as increase the value of sponsorship for their brand partners.

The NBA as also been an early partner of NextVR. With less than 1% of basketball fans globally ever setting foot in an NBA arena, the league turned to technology for ways to replicate the unique court-side experience.

Here is what I have seen them do over the last 4 years working in partnership with the NBA:

  • The relentless appetite to innovate comes from the top. This helps identify trends early and permission to experiment.
  • Everyone comes to new opportunity with an open mind and is willing to let the partner (in my case Twitter and NextVR) guide the project with their expertise.
    The NBA sets the standards and the direction they are looking for in the partnership and then they get out of the way allowing the experts to do their best job.
  • Once the model works, they scale quickly.
  • Finally, once the program is scaling, collaborative creative thinking brings new idea to constantly evolve new products.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that Facebook is using F8, its yearly developers conference, to explain how it is rebuilding its platforms and how it will run the company around Privacy. 

In a nutshell, a privacy focused social network means that Facebook is going to be the Living room vs. being the Town Hall, which has always been Twitter’s territory. So, everyone is now finding its place in the world. 

The tech press is doing a good job at covering this aspect and the 6 product principles (encryption, reduced permanence, safety, interoperability, secure data storage), so I am focusing this post on what I have heard specifically about immersive computing.

It is clear that Facebook’s he future is private, it is also clear the future of computing is immersive.

Zuckerberg kicked off the Oculus section of the opening keynote with a simple statement “This is going to be a BIG year for VR“.
So, this year, it is not about the long-term vision and engineering break throughs around immersive computing, it is all about reveling what the VR community was expecting, ship date (May 21st) and pricing ($399) or the Oculus Rift S and Quest.

With Oculus Quest, it feels like the promise of VR is finally going to live up to the user’s expectations: for the 1st time people can move around in experiences, no cable, no external tracking, all made possible by Oculus insights. It is easy to carry, and content can be casted to smart phones or TV- Read detailed product review here

Oculus is the next computing platform and it now has a suite of interoperable products for everyone: Go for immersive media + Rift and Quest for gaming.

At F8 Oculus also announced enterprise packages for Go & Quest with features adapted to large scale organizations such as bulk upload and control, quick replacement, extended warranty and support – all the details at oculus.com/business

Walmart which is training 1 Million associates with STRIVR about customer service scenario is a great case study to demonstrate the power of VR training:
According to a survey shared by Oculus:

  • Training time in VR is reduced by 40% compared to traditional training methods
  • 70% employees trained in VR outperformed employees trained with traditional training methods.

For medical training, piloted by Johnson & Johnson: surgeons trained to perform a specific procedure in VR outperformed surgeon trained with traditional methods by +230% on various scale of criteria. This is simply due to the fact that surgeons trained in VR feel like they have already done the procedure rather than rehearsed for it.

And finally since eye contact and full body language are absolutely critical to sense of presence and making connections in VR, the Oculus team shared their full body codex avatars prototypes.
Unfortunately, it is still years away to being a consumer product. This work is really impressive and goes all the way back to understanding how the human body works : from brain to bones to muscles to skin and layering fabric movement of the clothes on top.
If that was not complex enough, new social norms need to be created so that people can build social fabric in VR. For that element, Facebook’s knowledge of the social graph is a key asset. A t
